Occupy: Education

Occupy: Education

Last week was a huge week for Occupy Education.

March 1st was the local day of action for OccEd. SF had a rally at Civic Center and a NVDA at the State Building. I helped to organize & participated in the direct action/civil disobedience. We went in ahead teams and were successful in faxing demand letters to each CA legislator except for gov. Jerry Brown (ironically because his office was closed due to budget cuts). Some offices were receptive & supported the cause, others weren’t as…enthusiastic. After the 2 fax teams finished we came down to the lobby and joined the teach ins. There was a great mix of students, teachers, and labor people and the media presence was extremely heavy. Many people dispersed to join the rally, but around 15 of us stayed to occupy the damn building and discussed the demands:

Abolish Student Debt

Pass the Millionaire’s Tax/ Oil Severance Tax & reject Jerry Brown’s budget

Stop the 485 Pink Slips that will be given to SF Paraprofessional Educators

Respect the rights of Occupy (freedom of assembly & speech)

Me and a teacher from CCSF spoke in a short press conference, and then we had another teach in and discussed achievable goals. CHP came in and warned us that the building was closed, gave a dispersal order, and we kept on with the teach in as officers pulled us away 1 by 1 to arrest us. Luckily it was the quickest cite & release ever (they even let one long time activist walk free of citation and one CHP officer apologized to the last arrestee and chanted with her). A very successful precursor!

March 5th was the Occupation of the Capitol. On the 3rd I joined up with the amazing 99 mile marchers and slept at the church (where they ended the march day) and ate then sang around the piano with incredible people. The next day was the long stretch from Vacaville to UC Davis (21 miles). Such a superb way to spend my 19th birthday. I marveled at the passion of the marchers and how far they had already walked. Around 7:30pm I went with one of the vans and some marchers to catch up with an strategy meeting for the next day. We were exhausted, and after the meeting we walked over to the UC Davis occupy site and were welcomed by 40 or so tents and the best fucking food ever. People sang happy birthday to me and I blew out candles in a pecan pie, in the infamous pepper spray spot. We held a GA and discussed the next day’s actions. In the morn’ I was stoked to occupy!! I went on the 8am bus and we tried to recruit people to go into the capitol and participate in a very democratic process (instead of just the rally that happens every year & is put on by student government and has speakers who don’t properly serve the 99% ie, gavin newsom). There were rumors about the building closing at 1pm but tons of people filled into the rotunda and around 3 we began the people’s assembly inside the building!! Aside from the CHP blocking off people in the hallways which was not anticipated and made communication/facilitation super difficult, there was such a positive message that we conveyed. Students, teachers, labor workers, and a whole mix of people were represented & voiced their concern for the horribly underfunded education system. We voted that the demands were:

Abolish student debt

Abolish prop 13

Democratize UC & CSU Board of Trustees and Regents

Pass the Millionaires Tax

Refund higher education

Around 70 of us stayed to get arrested. Those of us in the rotunda circled and introduced ourselves and why we were there. We chanted in solidarity with our comrades in the hallway who were getting arrested as well. They took us in vans and one bus to a CHP training facility (which was weird because it had nicer desks than my school). After we were cited for trespassing, they took us to WALL-MART! (REALLY!?!). The people I was in a van with went to eat at In N Out (which apparently is where all the cops go to eat as well). So, despite the action not living on like Madison, I feel that it was successful in that our message was conveyed and now we have demands that are being organized around. The amount of community and friendship that I gained and experienced in that last week is something that I wish every person gets to live. My heart and mind cannot explain how thankful I am and how much I love the people within this movement.

I decided to turn the tables on Occupy SFSU and crash their party celebrating the “99 Mile March for Education and Social Justice” from Oakland, Calif. to UC Davis and their occupation of the California State Capitol building on March 5.

SFSU senior and activist Ivonne Quiroz spoke with me about the three day march and perhaps her most memorable moment: getting arrested for occupying the Capitol. Quiroz was one of the 68 students who chose to get arrested in the Capitol building to raise awareness to the tuition increases.
